Are you kitten me?!

Dear friends and family,

It was a wild week at the PRS!! Lots of rainstorms and crazy adventures (aka lots of fun!)... And also lots of animals, and not just the chipmunks which have doubled in number in the past two weeks, or the wild turkeys who strut around the site!

Last Monday we were all sitting in our house writing letters and emails on our p-day when we heard what sounded like a kitten meowing. So we got everyone quiet and were tiptoeing around the house trying to figure out where it was coming from, and we even had search party run around the outside of the house. No cat. Fast forward to 9:00pm after our evening at the site, and we were a little chilly so we went to turn up the heat. All of a sudden there was quite a bit of loud meowing going on, so the four of us said a prayer together that we would be able to find the kitten. A few minutes later we came to the conclusion that it was coming from the basement, so we geared up in our boots, 1 inch flashlights, towels, a cardboard box, and some canned chicken. After doing some exploring in our creepy basement, clinging to each other we found a little hole in the wall which two little kittens poked their heads out of! After a good chunk of time with no success of getting the kittens out, we said another prayer to get them out. After a lot of coaxing with chicken we managed to snatch two kittens out of the hole in the basement wall, but there was still a third whining in the wall. We gave Elder Walker a call, he said, "Kittens?? Holy catfish!!" and came to rescue! (Which, by the way, was hilarious seeing Elder Walker meowing and calling to a kitten hiding in the wall!!). Just a few minutes before 11:00 we had all three kittens safe and sound, happy in a little box.

3 cute stowaways
Yes, she is really holding 2 black kittens.  They kind of blend in.  :)

It was just the craziest night ever! And in the morning all the other sisters ran to our house for their daily exercise and got to play with kittens :)

The next morning Sis. Francis and I were out running and ran past Sandy's house (who Sister Robison and I initially started teaching with her boys), but stopped because she looked a little frustrated... Turns out two of her ducks had gotten out of their fence and were wandering around the yard. We ran back to the house to round up some sisters and said a prayer that we would be able to catch the ducks. After a bit of corralling and plenty of laughs from Sandy, we were able to get the ducks back in their little fenced-in area.

"Here ducky ducky..."
Sister Anderson has some skills!

So, the lesson learned this week...prayer is real!!! Even if we are not answered in the very moment we pray, or in the way we would like to be answered, Heavenly Father does listen and is aware of us. Nothing is too insignificant to talk to Heavenly Father about, even if you are asking for help to catch kittens or ducks! Our VC training on Friday was all about prayer and how we can make it more personal by eliminating repetitious phrases, and really thinking about who we are praying about. Just like a parent and child, our Heavenly Father loves and cares about us, and wants to hear from us.

I love being able to help so many people who are all children of our Heavenly Father. Have a wonderful week, and a wonderful summer vacation now! :) Love you all! Hurrah for Israel!

Love, Sister Larsen

This video is their "first run" of a song the VC Director asked them to work on.  They practiced it one evening and shared it with Elder Walker and some guests the next night.  "I Am a Child of God"

🎶The Priesthood is Restored! 🎶

Dear friends and family,

Yesterday we celebrated 187 years of priesthood power being restored!  We had a busy weekend with visitors coming in for the commemoration of the Aaronic
Priesthood on the very grounds where it happened, and it was a great week leading up to that!
Grounds crew:  Sisters Larsen, Gomm, Martinez, Francis

Sister Walker to the rescue!
Earlier this week we had a grounds work day with Sisters Gomm and Martinez. We pruned plants, dug around trees, spread mulch around...  all good stuff! I've never had as much fun doing yard work in my life as I have since being here at the site. But that was a promise we were given by President Nelson on dedication day, that if we didn't have fun here at the site, we wouldn't have fun anywhere. I think we've done a pretty good job at fulfilling that so far :)

After the grounds were looking spiffy for Priesthood commemoration weekend, Brother Steve Olsen from the historical department in Salt Lake, who was one of the main guys in the reconstruction of our site, came for a weekend visit. He is so awesome, and gave some really great insights we had never even thought of before. He spoke at our early Friday morning training meeting, at the Fathers & Sons Priesthood commemoration campout fireside our stake had at the site Friday night, and then in Sacrament meeting on Sunday.... He was a busy man, but we all learned so much and are grateful for him making the trip out.

Something Brother Olson talked about was D&C section 27 received here in Harmony, which was revelation on the sacrament. In the sacrament prayers the two verbs stated are "remember" and "witness." He said the reason the church builds and reconstructs historical sites is to help the saints remember the events that took place, and to allow them to become a witness to the spirit there. Not only that, but he said that these places allow us to witness to Heavenly Father that we remember what has been done for us. Brother Olson said even if nobody ever came to the site, all of the work that would be put into reconstruction would be worth it because it would still be a witness and remembrance to our Heavenly Father that revelations were received, the Book of Mormon translated, and the priesthood being restored.

With Brother Olson
Another neat thing he brought up was that there are only two places in the entire church that are dedicated by apostolic authority and never relocated--temples and historic sites. He thought of temple and historic sites as being the bookends of the dispensation. Historic sites are where blessings were promised and temples are where those blessings are received. And it's always fun to get a fresh perspective on things, especially being at the site 24/7.

I really do feel so lucky to be walking on sacred ground all day, every day. I'm so grateful for the Book of Mormon, which sparked Joseph's question to ask for the authority to baptize. I love that this gospel is one of having questions and acting on the answers. It is active! I know that the authority to act in God's name really has been restored, and was given back to us through the young prophet Joseph Smith. The priesthood is what allows us to receive SO many blessings... Taking the sacrament, baby blessings, receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost, father's blessings, baptism, blessings of comfort and counsel, temple sealings, blessings of healing, dedications, the power to set missionaries apart as representatives of Jesus Christ... And that's just the beginning of the general blessings available to us. Blessings for us, our families, friends, and even those beyond the veil. I love this gospel! Hurrah for Israel!

Love,

Sister Larsen

Lead Me, Guide Me, Walk Beside Me

Facetiming on Mother's Day!

Dear friends and family,

I remember being at BYU-I last year and at every Tuesday devotional President Clark would open with, "It's another great day here at BYU-Idaho," so it seems fitting to say, "It's been another great week here at the PRS." Rain, still almost every day, but now tons of flowers and green, some fabulous families on tour, and Facetiming on Mother's Day of course :)

We gave a tour to the cutest mom and her little boy and girl, who were 4 and 2. They were adorable!! The mom, who is originally from Brazil, was telling us all about her love for the gospel and how it has blessed her family even with her husband who is not attending church with them. She was a "woman of great faith," and taught her kids so well. As we came to the doors of the Hale and Smith home she would crouch down to her kids and whisper, "This is a very special place, so we need to use our reverent voices and be good." We were caught by surprise when we were talking with normal voices, and the children would whisper back and fold their arms. So we continued through the rooms all whispering together. And the second they stepped foot outside the homes it was back to skipping down the path, or collecting rocks or picking dandelions to blow. But this sweet tour gave me so much respect for this mother who was able to foster a spiritual experience for her kids even though they were so little.

Last interview with President T. Gary and Sister Pam Anderson
Here in the PPM we have interviews with President Anderson every other transfer, and with them leaving in 6 weeks, we had our last interviews with them this past week. Lucky for us, they love the site so much it won't be the last time they visit before they leave. Sister Anderson brought "the mission quilt," which is a quilt she had made with the mission logo on it for all of the departing missionaries to sign their names and release date.  Speaking of which, I can't believe I hit HUMP DAY (my halfway point) on Thursday!! Where has the time gone?!?!  Time on a mission really is the strangest thing! In interviews with President Anderson he gave everyone a temple recommend case with a picture of the new Philly temple on the front and our mission motto inside, on one condition.... that I stay worthy to hold a temple recommend for the rest of my life. He also talked to me about how he absolutely loves all the missionaries in the mission, but doesn't necessarily trust all of them. Talking about that trust he has with the PRS sisters and about the temple, made me think of our Heavenly Father. He loves us, his children, so so so much, but he doesn't always trust us to do the work he needs to be done. It is only when we do our part to do our best, keep the commandments, be like our Savior and place our trust in our Father, that He trusts us enough with his sacred work and gives us the blessings He so willingly wants to give.

I love the story of the 2,000 stripling warriors who loved God and loved their mothers. Pieces of Alma 56 say, "...behold our God is with us, and he will not suffer that we should fall; then let us go forth... And they rehearsed unto me the words of their mothers, saying: We do not doubt our mothers knew it... They had been taught by their mothers, that if they did not doubt, God would deliver them." We have heavenly and earthly parents who can help, lead, and guide us. As individuals and as families, if we have faith and make our will our Heavenly Father's we will be more and more aware of His love for us. I am so lucky to have been taught in a faith-filled home, and to be out here in Susquehanna helping families strengthen their faith in the restored gospel of Jesus Christ.

Have a great week everyone! Remember who you are! Hurrah for Israel!

 Love, Sister Larsen

April Showers bring... May Showers ☔️

Dear friends and family,

It's rained everyday this month!!...granted it’s only been 2 days, but it's a good thing! :)

Spring flowers are blooming
The site is starting to look greener and greener, and the people are coming in more and more! On Saturday we had more than 200 guests, it was so much fun!

This week we had a sweet young family come in who I have actually taken on tour twice before. They are awesome! I love their little girl, Lola. She is so cute! As we were walking to the Hale home she told me how a few months ago her Bishop asked her to talk in Sacrament Meeting (still several years shy of being in YW) on the Plan of Salvation and how excited she was to give her 7 minute talk! She also loves to bear her testimony in Sacrament Meeting every month, which the exception of being sick and not able to go to church on those Sundays. So as we were finishing up our tour at the Smith home we invited them all to bear their testimony of the site and the events that took place in either Sacrament Meeting or in a church class to strengthen other people's testimonies. Lola really wanted Sister Francis and I to be there when she bore her testimony, so her family actually came and attended our branch. She talked all about how important baptism and the Holy Ghost are, and it was so sweet watching this little girl with absolute no fear to share the gospel get up in front of a congregation to tell them what she knew to be true. And to put a cherry on top of all that, Lola and her family are planning to bring their nonmember neighbors to the site for a FHE tour soon!

At the Hale home
In the Hale home I love to tell a story about Emma when she was 7 years old (and I'm sorry if this is a repeat), how circuit riders or traveling preachers would come through the area frequently. Emma loved to listen to them and one a day a preacher asked everyone listening in the congregation to go out into the woods and pray for a spiritual experience, and so little Emma did. As she was kneeling the woods near her home praying aloud, her father, a hunter came across her and overheard her prayer which was actually for him. Emma was praying that his heart would be softened, and soon after that experience he allowed preachers to come use his home as a place for them to preach to congregations. It all came through Emma's childlike faith.

There is a scripture in the Book of Mormon I've come to really love since being here at the visitor center. It's Moroni 8:17, "And I am filled with charity, which is everlasting love; wherefore, all children are alike unto me; wherefore, I love little children with a perfect love; and they are all alike and partakers of salvation."  Having childlike faith helps us to truly feel of our Savior's love for us as we trust in Him and our Savior's plan.  Our faith is what leads to action, action that will keep on the right path which leads back to our heavenly home.

I'm so grateful for this restored gospel and to be a missionary! Happy Mother's Day to all you wonderful women out there making a difference in so many lives!

Love,
Sister Larsen

Tender Mercies at the Site

Dear friends and family,

I really want to start by saying, "What another great week at the site!" But when is it not another great week at the site?? Anyways, it was a good one! It's beginning to look like spring up here, with little green leaves starting to poke out on the trees, and flowers are beginning to pick their little heads up!

"Some surprise tulips popped up in front of our house... so cute!"

Home Sweet Home
It's a typical routine up here, no crazy big tour groups or general authorities this week, but the tours are beginning to come in fairly frequently now. I'd say we're averaging 2 tours a day per companionship, and the online stuff is still keeping us busy! But here's an awesome miracle story from this week...

Sister Brown, who is now one of the half-time proselyting sisters in Susquehanna, was going through their phone calling previous investigators. She happened to call Sandy at the exact moment she and her husband were driving on 171 by the site, so her husband slammed on the brakes, said they could come in to take a tour and turned into our parking lot. The Susquehanna sisters gave Sandy and her husband a tour and they loved it!

On Sunday, Sandy and her two boys, Travis and TJ came to church and stayed the whole three hours!!! After church Sandy wanted the boys to go on the full tour she had a few days prior, and the part time sisters were going to a lesson so they asked if Sister Francis and I could take the three of them on a tour. I was so excited!! The boys absolutely loved it and everything they were learning. They still remembered who Joseph Smith was and what he did, and where their copies of the Book of Mormon were at home, and they were asking questions and giving answers... Happy missionary heart!! Down in the Smith home where 70% of the Book of Mormon was translated we were able to recommit them to read and pray about the Book of Mormon and begin taking the lessons with the sisters again... And they are back on board!

This site was a place where miracles happened, and still is a place where miracles happen! I know that the things that happened here really did happen, and that the Book of Mormon was written for us and our day. The priesthood is a sacred gift from our Heavenly Father that allows us the blessings of eternity. His plan is one of lasting happiness and that's what people can come to understand when they come to this site.

One of my all time favorite scriptures from the Book of Mormon (thanks to the ah-mazing video shown here) talks about our happiness. Mosiah 2:41 says, "And moreover, I would desire that ye should consider on the blessed and happy state of those that keep the commandments of God. For behold, they are blessed in all things, both temporal and spiritual; and if they hold out faithful to the end they are received into heaven, that thereby they may dwell with God in a state of never-ending happiness. O remember, remember that these things are true; for the Lord God hath spoken it."

Be HAPPY. Be HOPEFUL. Be BELIEVING. Have a wonderful week everyone. Hurrah for Israel!

Love,
Sister Larsen

The Music of the Gospel

Letter written 4/18/2016

Dear friends and family,

What an awesome week! We are busy, busy, busy at the site with tours coming through every day. Yesterday I think the longest Sister Francis and I waited between tours was 15 minutes. It's a good feeling to see the place alive again!

This week we tried out our first run of a system we will use for large groups and busy summer weeks, referred to by us sisters as "Code Battleship," and it went really well! We had our largest youth conference group come through the site on Saturday, with 140 youth plus leaders. They were such an amazing, and well behaved (woohoo!!) group of kids from New Jersey.

Sharing music with a youth conference group
They were so well prepared, having learned about the site at Mutual activities, read Ensign articles and having planned firesides on site. I love being around the youth! We were able to kick off their beginning devotional with a song, which we all have missed doing together since everyone left for winter.

Highlight of the week: meeting Bishop Causse, the Presiding Bishop of the church. He is so nice!!

He came here to the site for business, looking at the building, etc. but we were all able to meet him and sing for him and the other men from the Seventy and church headquarters who came with him. We sang a new song we've recently put together since the new sisters came in; it's a really pretty arrangement of "The Lord is my Shepherd" with violin. After we finished our song Bishop Causse said it was inappropriate to clap, but they wanted to so badly they asked if we had an "encore" number, so we sang them our very favorite a capella number "Abide with Me." It was so funny seeing all these men with their phones out taking a video of us for their families back home. Afterwards Bishop Causse talked to us about how the talent was there, but even more important than that, the Spirit was there. He told us if continued to use every opportunity we could to begin our tours with singing to our guests, we would convert many people.

After talking to us, Bishop Causse took a few minutes to play the piano for us, and he can really play!! He is an amazing pianist, but the spirit was there and it helped me understand what it's like for our guests to be on the receiving end.

After Bishop Causse had finished and left the site, Elder Walker called us all together. Brother Hinckley, who was with Bishop Causse, had approached Elder Walker and told him the meeting they had was the very best he had ever had with the Bishop, and he attributed it to us starting off their afternoon with our music. And in touring the buildings, chapel, grounds and talking with Elder Walker, there will be a lot of changes happening at the PRS. Bishop Causse is seeing that grounds will be bought to make a camp site, an amphitheater will be built, picnicking areas developed, missionary housing for senior and sister missionaries on site, and a remodel of the chapel to fit a grand piano so we can sing on the rostrum (we currently drag a piano in from a different room). Bishop Causse left saying he would remember this day with the PRS sisters for the rest of his life (we will too!), and many people will be able to appreciate what came from our meeting in years to come!

I love the talk by Elder Andersen of the seventy, "The Music of the Gospel." In his talk he says, "The dance steps of the gospel are the things we do; the music of the gospel is the joyful spiritual feeling that comes from the Holy Ghost. It brings a change of heart and is the source of all righteous desires. The dance steps require discipline, but the joy of the dance will be experienced only when we come to hear the music." When we listen to the Holy Ghost and act on the promptings we receive, that is when we experience change growth. Just this Sunday, Brother Garrison, who Sister Robison and I met, blessed the Sacrament. It's amazing to see such big change in a person happen in such a short amount of time. But it only happened in him because he allowed the Spirit to touch his heart and excite him to act on the truths he was learning, and now he is blessing so many lives.

Hurrah for Israel! Until next week!

Love,
Sister Larsen

A few updates from Susquehanna

This is a bit of a different post.  Sis. Larsen (inadvertently, I'm sure) did not send a group email this week, but she did send Scott and I each a letter.  Here is some of what she wrote there, plus some pictures she sent:

How are you?  How has your week gone?  I'm so good! So happy to be here in Susquehanna. This week we met Bishop Causse... And he is SO nice!! I think he shook my hand 3 different times and told me I played the violin beautifully. It’s not everyday the Presiding Bishop tells you that!!  (Note from Alicia:  I guess we’ll hear the story behind that next week...)

Bishop Causse - talking with the missionaries
In response to a question I asked about what a normal day looks like, now that she is full time (no proselyting) at the Visitor’s Center:  Typical day? Normal exercise, then get ready. Then studies from 8-8:30. Then we drive the VC van to pick up another set of sisters on Washington Street, then to the PRS by 8:45 for our recitation. Tours, online stuff, quick lunch, back to work, quick dinner (occasionally dinner after 9:00 when we go home because we're busy), song practice from 8-9, drop off Washington sisters, then home. Read from the white handbook and plan goals for our upcoming day. Prep lunch and dinner for the next day to eat at the VC.  Get ready for bed and nighty-night! And we wake up for more. It's really weird not having actual studies in the morning, but we really try to read while we sit out front waiting for guests. During the summer that won't even happen though!

I told her I’d been asked to teach a lesson on “Why We Need the Book of Mormon”, and asked for her perspective, because of her experiences serving at the location where much of it was translated:  That's such a fun lesson topic you get to teach!! But there are a million reasons why we need the Book of Mormon... Something neat I've learned is that without the Book of Mormon we wouldn't have priesthood authority. It was while translating and reading about the authority to baptize that Joseph wondered about that authority and went out into the grove of sugar maple trees here at the site and prayed. John the Baptist came, gave them that authority... And fast forward to today and think about all the blessings we can receive because of priesthood power... Everything!! And all because of the Book of Mormon. And because one person acted on what they read.

And a few pictures... more to come next week:

SusqueHOME!

Dear friends and family,

Hello from my favorite spot on the planet... SUSQUEHANNA!!! It is SO GOOD to be home, and that's really what it feels like, coming home. We were all in tears and had plenty of hugs and handshakes going around.
Best feeling in the world to be reunited as one big, happy Priesthood Restoration Site family. After a full day of training and meetings, we jumped right back into the swing of things and it's so nice to have the site buzzing with missionaries again.

My new companion, Sister Francis, is so, so much fun!!

In the parlor of the Hale home with Sis. Francis
We have been all giggles since being together! She came out 1 month before me and she left the site in November when most of the sisters did, so it was a happy reunion. I thought being full time at the visitor center would be a hard adjustment because I've always been proselyting at least part-time, but I actually really like being full-time VC. It's very different from the field, but there are some definite similarities!

Something I like is being able to adapt our tours to different people and their needs, just like how we adapt our lessons when we teach. We had a family come through the site and the mom absolutely loved Emma Hale Smith, so we were able to focus a lot on her and her story. Being at the site I've learned a lot more about her, and admire her so much.
This pic was texted to Alicia by a visitor to the site this week who wrote
how grateful she was to feel and hear Sis. Larsen and Sis. Francis' testimonies.
She may (?) have been the mother Sis. Larsen referred to her in her letter.

(Emma Hale Smith is pictured above.) In any case, it was a sweet surprise!
We shared a scripture I fell in love with a couple weeks ago. I think that Joseph must have read these verses in Alma 19 and thought of Emma. "And Ammon said unto her: Believest thou this? And she said unto him: I have had no witness save thy word, and the word of our servants; nevertheless I believe that it shall be according as thou hast said. And Ammon said unto her: Blessed art thou because of thy exceeding faith; I say unto thee, woman, there has not been such great faith among all the people of the Nephites." I love being able to share a verse from the Book of Mormon with our guests in the room where 70% of the book was translated. It just brings a special spirit.

Something else we are very busy with is our online teaching. After the church put out an Easter initiative video, lots of people visited Mormon.org and saw a pop up for a free Bible provided by the church. They leave their contact information, which is then passed into us. So our job is to call them, confirm their contact information, and that they will be okay with missionaries delivering the Bible to their door. If they are okay with that, we send their information to local missionaries and they are supposed to contact them within 24 hours. It's a long process, but it has completely changed the online referral system. Elder Walker talked to Salt Lake and they told him after changing the system to have missionaries and MTC workers call to ask if missionaries can come deliver their requested items, the number of people taught has been increased by 500% which is insane!!! What's neat for me is I can see when the people I refer to missionaries have been contacted, and when they have agreed to take the lessons and be taught. It is so cool!!

And one more highlight of the week... Seeing the investigator I found with Sister Robison, Tim!! He came into the site to say hello, and I was just so, so happy! He introduced himself to all the sisters as "Brother Garrison", (how sweet is that?!) and told them all his story.  Right now he is preparing names to take to the temple, loves church and learning, and I couldn't be more excited for him! He has this light about him, that wasn't quite there before and I know it's because he was baptized and now has the Gift of the Holy Ghost. He is an absolutely amazing person that I feel so blessed Heavenly Father allowed me to have met while out.

I'm so grateful to be serving in such a wonderful place, with such wonderful people, and be serving such wonderful people! So many blessings! Hurrah for Israel!

Love,
Sister Larsen

Book of Mormon, Baptism & Braids

Dear friends and family,

What a wonderful last week here in West Philadelphia! We doubled the number of lessons we taught last week (YAY for people holding lessons!!), the weather was beautiful and drizzly, and of course
General Conference was just the cherry on top to a great transfer!

I just love Stephanie.
With Stephanie
We weren't able to really meet the week before last because she was sick, but she got better and her trip to NY was cancelled so she got to stay in town all week and spend General Conference weekend with us! She is so excited and so prepared for her baptism in 2 weeks. We started talking details at one of our lessons with her this past week, and she wants the baptism to be all about Christ, not just her decision to become a member of the church. So we started brainstorming ideas of how we could help her keep her focus and came up with this cute idea. She wants everyone to put their painted handprint on a blanket and write their testimony of Christ next to it as a keepsake of her baptism. In our morning studies we had shared some highlights from Book of Mormon verses we had read and read 1 Nephi 21:15-16 which we shared with Stephanie. "For can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? Yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee, O house of Israel. Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me." She knows that her baptism is so much more than just becoming a member of the church and enjoying the fellowship that comes along with that, but that she is choosing to remember Jesus Christ and take upon herself His name, just as He has taken upon Himself a reminder of her and everyone who has, does and will live.

We were finally able to get in contact with a young woman named Mai who we had met several weeks ago and set up an appointment to see her.  She gave us an address to meet at... And it turned out to be an African Hair braiding salon. So we walk in to women in African dress braiding and sewing weaves into people's hair and Mai calling us over to some chairs. It was awesome, and now I am considering corn rows or something haha! But we did our thing despite the atypical environment...sang a hymn, had a prayer, and read from the Book of Mormon. It was actually a really great lesson! Mai really came to understand that while there are many people who may say different things about the church, and there are lots of different opinions floating around out there, the only way to know what the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is all about is by learning about it yourself and asking God if what is taught is true. I'm really excited for Sister Kartchner to continue teaching her because she has a lot of potential!

Sisters Roesch, Kartchner, and Larsen out finding
during Sis. Roesch's final week on her mission
General Conference weekend is the best!!! I don't think I've ever looked as forward to it as I have since serving! How to choose a favorite?? I will say Jeffrey R. Holland always knows how to lay it down. Stephanie (who watched 3 sessions with us, how awesome is that?!?), my companions and I were invited over to the Bartons', a young couple in the P4 Ward, for the afternoon session on Sunday. We were all waiting for Elder Holland to speak so when they finally announced him as the concluding speaker there was "exceedingly great joy," and everyone sat up a little straighter :) I really loved his comments on how the Lord will bless, and wants to bless, those who desire to improve. Just like in the Book of Mormon, He takes weak things and makes them strong, we just have to try and put forth our best effort.  Sometimes all we can offer is our "seeking to do good," but as long as we are trying our best, the Lord will help lift us the rest of the way. I think one of my favorite things he said was, "Heaven is cheering you on today, tomorrow and forever." And it's so true! I've learned a lot from serving here in West Philly. And not just how to say "Book of Mormon" in Hindi, or understand Liberians over the phone, or how to drive like the locals, but how much Heavenly Father loves each of His children. He is cheering us on with every step we take forward, and helping kindly correct us when we start to falter back.  His love is unconditional and will always be there for us no matter what. What a beautiful promise!

Love,
Sister Larsen

Serving Like Our Savior

Dear friends and family,

This transfer has just flown by! I can't believe I only have one more week here in Philly! (Note from Alicia:  Sis. Larsen sent this letter Monday morning.  Monday afternoon she emailed her dad to say the mission president had contacted her and she may be staying in Philly for one more transfer; she'll find out next week.)   I have learned so much in the past six weeks and  I am so grateful for the opportunity I've had to be here in this wonderful city!

Such a fun mural -- veggies!

This week was a slower teaching week, but we had some really neat experiences while we were out and about finding! We stopped by a woman named Pang. She is Hmong, from Laos, probably 4'8 and the cutest thing
ever! She let us right in and brought out waters and a big bowl of fruit and had her grandchildren watch "Hallelujah," with us. She loved it and all the pictures of people's family members, and how everyone in the video were from different parts of the world, but believe in God. Pang told us how she used to go to different inner city schools where the kids would be fighting and she would teach them how to love one another. She talked about how the world is a much better place when we put our outward differences aside and love each other as children of God. She said talking about herself, "tiny lady, but big heart!"

We were showing the Easter videos out on the street and came across a Haitian man, Junior. We hadn't seen anyone react so strongly (a.k.a. Feel the spirit so strongly) to the video until he watched it saying, "wow," through the whole thing. He told us his mother had passed away in the last year which had been very hard for him. It is different talking about the resurrection with someone when they are thinking of a specific loved one they know will live again. He invited us to come meet his family and share the video with them as well, so we hope to see them all very soon.

I also love, love, loved General Women's Broadcast on Saturday! It was so good, and I liked that all the talks had to do with service and when we serve we should serve out of love. I think serving in this area I've come to love so many different people, more than I thought I could. In the past week I don't even think I could name all the places I've met people from... Bangladesh, Ireland, Liberia, Mexico, England, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Ghana... And even though we are so different, I see them as my brothers and sisters, and I want to serve and love them! I loved the scriptures from Mark 14 that Sister Burton talked about, "...she hath wrought a good work... She hath done what she could..." Selfless service does not require us to give anything more than our heart. It doesn't have to be preplanned, or cost money, or be physically exhausting. What the Savior has asked of us is to give our hearts, and love others as He would.

"And behold, I tell you these things that ye may learn wisdom; that ye may learn that when ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God." Pray for specific opportunities and people to serve & love! I know we feel the Savior's love for us more fully when we lose ourselves in lifting others as he would.   Hurrah for Israel!

Love,
Sister Larsen

Happy Easter from the Philly Three and Ciana!
